George Walton

Up

Orphaned early, trained in carpentry, then law,

Walton's military hardships could not sway his patriotic dogma.

"...the glory that halos his name derives not a gleam from ancestral distinction--it is all his own."  From Lossing's 1848 Lives of Signers.     "Young Walton possessed a mind by nature strong in its powers, and though uncultivated, not having enjoyed even the advantages of a good scholastic education, he was ardently bent on the acquisition of knowledge; so bent, that during the day, at his leisure moments, he would collect light wood, which served him at night instead of a candle.  His application was close and indefatigable; his acquisitions rapid and valuable."  Rev. Charles A. Goodrich Lives of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence. New York: William Reed & Co., 1856. Pages 458-460.

At age 14 George was apprenticed to a carpenter who thought reading was a frivolous pursuit, and he would not give George time by day or lights by night with which to read.  Nevertheless, Walton would not be deterred in his goals.

Walton was an Episcopalian and identified as an Anglican by the Georgia Historical Society.  Ian Dorion, "Table of the Religious Affiliations of American Founders," 1997.  "Anglican" is the denominational name by which American Anglicans were known.  The Episcopal Church is the American province of the Anglican Communion.  Robert G. Ferris (editor), Signers of the Declaration: Historic Places Commemorating the Signing of the Declaration of Independence, published by the United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service: Washington, D.C. (revised edition 1975), page 142.   His son grew in his father's footsteps and served as Secretary of State during the time Andrew Jackson was Governor of West Florida.
